In the quiet countryside near Västerås, Sweden, where winters are long and the soil carries the memory of generations, a humble farmer named Arvid “Rune” Bergman, born in 1933, embodied the spirit of resilience in agriculture. One photo of him—hands in the earth, gaze steady—tells a story not just of survival, but of deep love for the land.
Though economic hardship eventually pulled Rune away from traditional farming, his heart never left the soil. He turned to seed production — especially vegetable seeds adapted to Sweden’s cool, resilient climate. Among his first achievements were crisp, colorful red lettuce varieties that today are considered heritage crops across the Nordic region.
Rune’s quiet dedication and tireless effort earned him the respect of both local farmers and agricultural researchers. But it was his son, Siljan Bergman, who carried the vision into the future.
In 1992, Siljan founded Bergman Seeds Trading — a company that honored the family’s legacy and Swedish agricultural identity. From the outset, the company specialized in high-quality seed production and genetic innovation, setting the foundation for a new era in sustainable horticulture.

Their R&D team has delivered game-changing varieties such as BS MARTE (a cold-resistant rocket) and the BS 4050 / 506 / 706 line of radicchios, which includes the world’s first hybrid radicchio developed using GMS technology a milestone in climate-smart agriculture.
